Eastside Café
Recycling Challenge 2010
Contest Rules

At Art City Austin 2010, we are committed to reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible to keep the environmental impact of our art festival to a bare minimum and to help keep Austin beautiful.  We have a lot to live up to after last year’s award-winning challenge! Please join our efforts. Your non-profit group can form a team to collect recyclable materials, gaining exposure for your organization while competing for a chance to win the $1000 top prize for the team which collects the most recycled material.  Here are the contest Rules:

  1. Recycling challenge hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday April 24th and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30  p.m. on Sunday April 25th.  We will, however, have teams arrive at site approximately 1/2 hour before the  Recycling Challenge start times.

  2. The team which collects the highest volume of recyclable materials during the Art City Austin Festival will  win a $1000 cash prize, the second place team $500, the third place team $200, and the 4th place $100.  All  participants will be given an Eastside Café Recycling Challenge/Art City Austin t-shirt to be worn  throughout the festival.

  3. Eastside Café Recycling Challenge contest winners will be announced to the public on the main music  stage of Art City Austin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday the 25th.  Cash awards will be given to participating teams  at 6:00 p.m., at the conclusion of the contest.  In order to be eligible to collect cash prizes, each team must  continue to collect recyclable materials until the conclusion of the festival 6:00.

  4. Each team will man 4 fixed recycling stations and 2 roving receptacles at all times during contest hours.

  5. All teams will be assigned fixed recycling stations Saturday morning.  Sunday morning, all teams will be  reassigned to new stations locations in order to ensure that no team has a geographical advantage over  another.

  6. Recyclables can be collected throughout festival grounds in any way actively or passively that does not  include the taking of recyclable materials from a competing team or the purposeful wasting of consumables  in order to create recyclable materials.

  7. During the festival, Recycling Challenge team members will instruct festival-goers on proper sorting of  garbage from recyclables.

  8. Full recycling barrels will be inspected, collected and tallied by Green Team festival judges who will  confirm the volume of recyclables and the quality of separation of garbage from recyclables.  Recyclables  contaminated with garbage and other non-recyclable materials will be disqualified and will not be counted  toward recycling volume totals.

  9. Cardboard collected for recycling will be broken down flat and stacked.  1 stack (equivalent in height to the  compost collection cube) will be counted as 1 barrel of recyclables.

  10. Recycling stations should be decorated with art identifying your non-profit group.   Each station will  include table space to display your group’s collateral material (printed using earth-friendly materials).

  11. Staffing requirements:  There will be at least 2 adult supervisors (persons over 21 years of age) and 12  other team members collecting recyclables at all times.  (Substitutions of contestants and supervisors are  recommended and encouraged to keep team members energy levels high.)

  12. Teams should bring as many volunteers as possible.  Art City Austin will provide a limited number of  volunteers.  You must provide supervisors for your group.

  13. Adult team members and supervisors agree not to drink alcoholic beverages during Art City Austin while  on Art City grounds.

  14. Adult supervisors of competing non-profit teams will be required to attend 2 informational meetings to be  held on the steps of City Hall prior to the festival weekend. The meetings will cover contest rules, proper  recycling and garbage separation guidelines, decoration of recycling stations, and promotional  opportunities for your non-profit.

  15. A volunteer waiver for each child participating must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.  Each adult volunteer must sign a volunteer waiver.  Absolutely no children under the age of 18 are allowed in the vendor area.
