Eastside Café
Recycling Challenge 2010
Volunteer Objectives

Art City Austin is committed to reducing, reusing and recycling everything possible to keep the environmental impact of our art festival to a bare minimum and to help keep Austin beautiful. Each volunteer will play a vital role in this project by collecting recyclable materials and manning watering stations throughout the festival.

  1. As a competitor in the Eastside Café Recycling Challenge at Art City Austin, you will collect and  facilitate the recycling of all materials formerly known as “trash!”  You will be the keys to the success of  our efforts to make this the greenest festival in Austin.

  2. You will be given a “Rabid Recycler” t-shirt to be worn throughout the festival to make you easily  identifiable as a member of our recycling teams.  T-shirts will be handed out at the meeting at Volunteer  Check-In immediately prior to your volunteer shift.

  3. You and your non-profit team will be competing for a chance to win a $1000 cash prize (2nd prize  $500, 3rd prize $300, 4th prize $100) by collecting the highest volume of uncontaminated recyclables.

  4. Recyclable materials including all clean plastics (such as empty beverage cups, plates, forks knives and  spoons which have been wiped free of food), empty soda cans, and all clean paper products (not food  stained napkins) will be placed in recycling bins.   All food products, liquids, food-stained napkins and  wet paper cups will be placed in composting receptacles.  You will receive instruction on proper sorting of  recyclables at the Recycling Challenge participants meeting at Volunteer Check-In just prior to your shift.

  5. At least one volunteer must remain at your team’s assigned recycling/water stations at all times to keep  recyclables and water from becoming contaminated. Otherwise, recyclables can be collected throughout  the festival grounds in any way actively or passively that does not include the taking of recyclable  materials from a competing team or the purposeful wasting of consumables in order to create recyclable  materials.   Two wheeled Recycling containers will be provided to each team as “roving” recycling bins.

  6. Full recycling bins will be inspected, collected and tallied by Green Team festival judges who will  confirm the volume of recyclables and the quality of separation of food and liquids from recyclables.   Recyclables contaminated by food or liquid non-recyclable materials will be disqualified and will not be  counted toward recycling volume totals.

  7. Eastside Café Recycling Challenge contest winners will be announced to the public on the main music  stage of Art City Austin at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday the 25th.  Cash awards in the form of a check will be  given to winning teams at 6:00 p.m. at the conclusion of the contest. In order to be eligible to collect  cash prizes, winning teams must continue to collect recyclable materials and man water stations until  the conclusion of the festival at 6:00.
